Shrove Tuesday 2020

Happy Pancake Day!

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before Lent. This day is one of the moveable feasts in the church calendar and is related to the date on which Easter falls. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9.

In the old days there were many foods that we would not eat during Lent such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on Shrove Tuesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent without going off. Pancakes were made on Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up eggs, fats and milk in the house by just adding flour.

Ingredients and Utensils
1 mug of plain flour
1 mug of milk
1 beaten egg
Knob of butter for frying

Mug x 2
Sieve
Bowl
Jug
Whisk
Frying pan
Spatula

Procedure
1. Sift the flour into a bowl to take out all the lumps.
2. Pour the milk into a jug.
3. Crack the egg into the milk. 
4. Stir the egg and the milk together using the whisk.
5. Pour the milk and the egg into the flour.
6. Mix it all together and beat the mixture until it is smooth.
7. Cover the pancake batter and let it stand for ten minutes. 
8. Heat some butter in the pan.
9. Pour some pancake batter into the pan.
10. Cook the mixture until there are bubbles in the pancake.
11. Turn the pancake over and cook it until it is golden brown. 
12. Enjoy with some of your favourite toppings. 

Tips
1. Try topping your pancake with healthy foods such as strawberries, blueberries and bananas.
